What Information Is Required for a Sheet Metal Die Quotation?

Prepare the models, drawings, material, volumes, tolerances and press information needed for an accurate sheet metal tooling quotation.

Published: 8/19/20261 min read

An accurate die quotation depends on complete, consistent technical data. The price cannot be determined reliably from a photograph or a basic part description because process choice, stations, steel, press trials and automation drive the workload.

A structured RFQ also makes supplier proposals comparable and reduces assumptions that later become cost or schedule changes.

1. Three-dimensional part model

Provide a neutral STEP or Parasolid model with the correct revision. The model supports geometry analysis, unfolding, process development and collision studies.

2. Dimensioned technical drawing

The drawing should state datums, critical and general tolerances, burr direction, surface class, coating, joining features and inspection requirements. Model and drawing revisions must agree.

3. Material and sheet thickness

State the exact material standard, grade, coating, hardness or mechanical properties and nominal thickness with tolerance. Similar commercial names can behave differently during forming.

4. Production volume and project life

Annual demand, batch sizes, peak capacity and lifetime quantity influence whether progressive, transfer or simpler tooling provides the best economics.

5. Press and production-line data

Include tonnage, bed and bolster dimensions, shut height, stroke, feed direction, coil limits, transfer capability, safety standard and acceptance location.

Compare more than the quoted price

Review scope, assumptions, tool life, spare parts, trials, dimensional reports, delivery, acceptance and warranty. A lower initial figure may exclude work needed for stable serial production.
